“Honk” Musical Featuring Olympia School Districts Employees
Running through this Sunday, the Olympia School District is featuring the musical Honk. What makes this production so unique is that employees of the district are the stars. Proceeds for Honk, which is a storyline based on “The Ugly Duckling” will be used to support teacher grants, as well as several additional educational foundation efforts.
The 2016 selection for the Honk musical, which is being held at the Performing Arts Center at Olympia High School, comes from the OSD Players. This amazing group consists of dedicated teachers, staff, and administrator associated with the Olympia School District who will be the stars of the show.
Created by Stiles & Drewes, the Honk musical has been in production worldwide with more than 8,000 productions. In fact, Honk has been performed in multiple languages. Honk has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including Best Musical from the 2000 Olivier Award.
Audiences of all ages will love this production. Ugly, the primary character in Honk, is unique from his brother and sister ducklings. In addition to ducks, the production features a variety of farm animals, which quickly notice the difference in spite of the mother’s protective flapping.
Feeling bad about himself, the small duckling goes on a venture of self-discovery, during which time he outwits a hungry Cat. Along his way, Ugly comes into contact with unique characters, helping him realize that being different is not a bad thing.
As stressed by Ryan Hall, Olympia School District Board President, it is exciting to bring the school’s faculty and staff to the stage again. This tradition allows teacher grants to be funded throughout the school year. He also expressed his gratitude toward the community for their involvement.
Since 1993, the OSD Players musical has been an annual event. Starting in 2005, proceeds from each play have been used specifically to benefit the school district. The Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organization, has a variety of programs beyond the annual musical to help the school district like tutoring grants, outdoor education, classroom grants, and emergency funding for student needs.
Anyone interested in seeing the production of Honk is invited to purchase tickets online or they can contact the Olympia School District Education Foundation directly by phone. Performances start at 7:00 pm with matinee performances scheduled for February 27 and 28 at 2:00 pm.
